Window of Opportunity for Progress in Resolving the Situation in Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte believes that there is currently a 'window of opportunity' for significant progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine over the next few weeks. He stated this in an interview with Anadolu agency.

'I believe that there is a window of opportunity this week, as well as in the next 10-14 days, to truly elevate the Ukrainian issue to a better level. Under the leadership of, of course, President Volodymyr Zelensky, but also with significant support from the American government,' Rutte emphasized.

The head of the alliance stressed that NATO continues to actively support Ukraine amid Russian aggression. According to him, the Russian side is intensively increasing its military potential.

'We know that the Russians are recovering at a rapid pace. They are currently producing in three months the amount of ammunition that the entire alliance produces in a year. At the same Time, the entire alliance is 25 times larger than Russia in terms of its economic power,' Rutte stated.

In light of the growing Russian threat, the Secretary General called on allies to significantly increase defense spending. 'I urge allies to spend much more on basic defense because we know that the Russian threat is constant and long-term,' he stressed.

Ukraine's NATO Membership and Future Alliance Summit

Touching on the issue of Ukraine's possible NATO membership, Rutte recalled the statement made at the Washington summit: 'Ukraine's path to NATO membership is irreversible.' However, he emphasized that the decision to accept new members depends on all 32 member countries of the alliance.

The Secretary General expressed confidence that the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague next month will be 'grand' and will demonstrate 'NATO's power, collective strength on the world stage.'
