In Ukrainian schools, mandatory subjects will be halved: how the program will change.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine announced the start of the reform of the senior profile school, which involves reducing the number of mandatory subjects for students in grades 10-12. Instead of thirteen subjects, students will study only seven. The list of mandatory disciplines will include Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature, History of Ukraine, English language, mathematics, physical education, and "Defense of Ukraine". The rest of the subjects high school students will be able to choose depending on the chosen profile of study in the academic lyceum.
Currently, students in grades 10-11 study significantly more subjects, including foreign literature, world history, civic education, biology, ecology, geography, physics, chemistry, and others. Additionally, they have to choose one subject from the list of selectively mandatory subjects: art, technology, computer science, or financial literacy.
In addition, graduates of the 9th grades are given the opportunity to independently choose training in an academic lyceum or in a vocational institution. The piloting of the reform will begin on September 1, 2025, in selected lyceums across the country. Already, 30 pilot institutions are preparing for the experiment: developing new educational programs, establishing cooperation with foreign lyceums, and analyzing needs and opportunities for the successful implementation of the reform. This educational reform aims to modernize the secondary education system in Ukraine and provide students with more opportunities for in-depth study of subjects according to their chosen direction.
