Seven dangerous illusions drivers face
Road safety experts have identified the seven most dangerous illusions drivers face. These optical deceptions can lead to serious mistakes in assessing the road situation and, as a consequence, to accidents.
This is reported by "Khvilya", referring to a video from the online driving school "Hour".
So, the experts highlighted 7 such illusions:
- Color illusion: dark cars seem slower and farther away than they actually are, while light cars seem the opposite. This can lead to incorrect speed and distance assessments of other vehicles.
- Tunnel illusion: in tunnels, drivers often lose their sense of real speed and may unintentionally increase it. This is especially dangerous when driving in a dark tunnel with oncoming cars with bright headlights.
- Distance illusion: incorrect estimation of the distance between cars is especially dangerous for novice drivers. It is recommended to keep a distance of at least 15 meters in the city and to calculate it depending on the speed on the highway.
- Speed illusion: after prolonged driving at high speed, the driver may feel that they are driving slower than they actually are. This is especially dangerous when entering populated areas with speed limits.
- Width illusion: the road may appear narrower or wider depending on the surrounding landscape. For example, after driving through an avenue of trees, an open space may create a sense of a wider road, provoking an increase in speed.
- Illusion of turns and straights: especially dangerous on mountain serpentines, where each turn is unique. The habit of accelerating on straight sections can play a cruel joke if a new turn unexpectedly begins instead of a straight one just after a turn.
- Time illusion: a driver's mood affects their perception of time. When in a hurry, it seems that time is running faster, which can lead to nervousness and traffic rule violations.
Experts emphasize that awareness of these illusions will help drivers better control the road situation. They recommend always adhering to speed limits, maintaining a safe distance, and being especially vigilant when road conditions change.
