Mount Paektu in North Korea has been granted the status of a global UNESCO Geopark. This stratovolcano, which represents the highest point on the Korean Peninsula and is located on the border with China, is considered sacred. This was reported by 'Hlavkom', citing CNN.

Mount Paektu has many legends and mythological beliefs. It is particularly regarded as the birthplace of the first Korean founder Tangun. North Korean state propaganda also claims that the ruling Kim family is descended from the 'sacred blood of Paektu'.

The great impetus for the ascent to Mount Paektu occurred at significant moments for North Korea. For example, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ascended the mountain in 2013, shortly before the execution of his uncle Chang Song-thaek. He also climbed the mountain before the nuclear tests in 2016. In 2018, South Korean President Moon Jae-in was granted permission to climb Mount Paektu as relations between the countries were strengthened.
