Comares: a town in the Spanish mountains that will interest tourists

The tiny Spanish town of Comares is underrated by travelers. It is worth attention, if only because there are no crowds of tourists.

A former resident of the town, Mark Jones, shared that it is located an hour's drive from Malaga in a mountainous area called Axarquía, which is not very well known among tourists, The Independent reports.

The population of the town has noticeably decreased and aged, so it still needs tourists to thrive.

The local authorities have invested significant funds into beautifying the town. Concrete or dirt paths have been replaced with cobblestones. A ceramic cooperative made attractive explanatory signs telling the history of the town from its origins as an Arab fortress. They have created dozens of new parking spaces under the town, and, as Jones noted, for several years they remained empty.

Overall, as Jones said, it is a quiet town, but life is bustling in the center of Comares - there is noise on the main square - voices, music, the clinking of glasses and plates.

'The main square is crowded. Waiters carrying coffee, beer, salads, and plates of fried fish run back and forth between the La Plaza bar and the neighboring restaurant Robert's. The courtyard of the Verde Olivia hotel is also doing well,' the article states.

On the viewpoint, visitors gather together, admiring the views of the coast and the majestic outlines of the local mountain La Maroma.

Groups of climbers can also be seen in the town. A zip line runs through the mountains, and Comares is quickly becoming a magnet for rock climbing. Tourists will also have access to amazing hiking and biking trails and souvenir shops with local goods that buyers will be thrilled with. And now, Jones noted, there is nowhere to park at the lots by the town.

'In the mountains, a quieter, more civilized, and friendlier form of rural tourism is taking root,' Jones believes, adding that, unlike previous years, you are sure to get a good night's sleep and great food, and (also unlike previous years) it's better to book a room in advance.

The best hotel and restaurant in Comares is Verde Olivia in the square. You will also find decent food at Roberts and Mirador de la Axarquia.
