New strain of dangerous virus spreads on cruise ships.

There have been increased outbreaks of stomach infections on cruise ships due to the spread of a new strain of norovirus. It is known that the rise in cases on land may influence the number of infections at sea. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), published by the Independent, indicates a link between the new strain and outbreaks of norovirus on land.
CDC states that cruise ships using hand sanitizers may be less effective in combating norovirus than simply washing hands with soap and water.
Increase in cases of illness
In 2024, the United States recorded 18 outbreaks of norovirus on cruise ships, marking a record high in the last ten years. Already in the first five months of 2025, the number of norovirus cases on ships may exceed last year’s figures. This year, outbreaks of gastrointestinal illnesses have been reported on cruise ships from companies such as Holland America, Viking Expedition, Seabourn, Cunard, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean.
In the U.S., approximately 2500 outbreaks of norovirus are reported annually, with only a small fraction occurring on cruise ships. As part of the Vessel Sanitation Program, measures are being taken to enhance cleaning and disinfection, isolate the sick, and maintain hand hygiene.
High risk of spread
As the population on cruise ships lives in close quarters and shared spaces, there is a high risk of spread of norovirus. It can board a vessel through contaminated food or water, as well as through passengers who brought the infection from land. CDC recommendations emphasize that norovirus can survive on surfaces for a long Time and is resistant to many disinfectants.
The situation with the spread of norovirus on cruise ships is becoming increasingly serious and requires comprehensive measures to prevent outbreaks among passengers and crew.
